FLOODS IN THE NORTH
BOUNDARY FENCES WASHED AWAY. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE(by telegraph—press association.) AUCKLAND, July 26. Heavy rain caused a bad flood in the Mangonui country. By midnight the whole flat portion of the land surrounding Kaitaia was converted into a lake. Fences were carried away in all directions and Lake Road was a running river. Five ho usee which had water inside were hurriedly vacated by the occupants. Orua, Fairburn and Peria suffered considerably. Miles of boundary fences are down. Many fanners had removed their stock to high country before the flood water submerged their land. At Peria, by a landslide which brought down half a hillside, a bridge leading to the courthouse at Rehau and Kaitaia wias washed away, doing damage to the value of thousands of pounds. The flood water is now receding.
RAILWAY LINE BLOCKED. WH ANG AREA, July 26. Exceptionally heavy rain which fell last night caused a. slip ou the railway line near Waiotira, delaying the north-bound express from Auckland by eight hours. During its clearance by a breakdown gang, all streams rose with alarming rapidity, temporarily flooding the low-lying areas. The overflow quickly subsided with the cessation ojf the downpour early this morning. RECORD RAINFALL AT WAIHT. WATHI, July 26. For the 24 hours ended eight o’clock this morning eight inches of rain fell, constituting a record for the time. Ohinemnri River and many creeks overflowed their banks, and the main Waihi-Paeroa Road for a short stretch is five’feet under water. Apart'from flooding the gas works, no material damage was done in town.
