PERSONAL ITEMS.
Aliss Loekhead, the former matron of the Hawera Public Hospital, who has been on a visit to Hawera, left by the south express this morning. Air P. AY. Lamb, of Hawera, who is proceeding on a visit to Australia, was a passenger on the south train this morning, and is to sail for Sydney on the Alaheno, leaving AA’ellington tomorrow. He expects to be away for about a mouth or six weeks.
lM.r J. Logan Stout, S.AL, of Palmerston North, is making .satisfaotory progre-ss. after liis recent illness. He is still confined to his home but will probably leaA r e in the course of a week or so on a- trip for the benefit of his health.
Mr. H. C. Taylor, chairman of directors of the Ngaire Dairy Company, will he nominated for a seat on the Stratford County Council to represent the south riding, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. S. Parker. This was the unanimous decision of a meeting of ratepayers last night at Ngaere. At the age of 95 years, Mu* Thomas Millington Hill, one of the oldest residents of the township of Hamilton, died recently. He- was born in Worcestershire. England, and as a, young man tried Ibiis luck on the Australian goldfields. He was in the rush to Bendigo, and came across to the South Island of New Zealand to again continue hunting for gold. In the latter stages of the war with the Maoris, Sir Hill was in the commissariat department of the Fourth Waikato Regiment, and in 1864 was stationed on the site where Hamilton now stands. When peace was declared, Mr Hill settled at Hamilton and had lived there ever since, for 63 years, carrying on business as a storekeeper.
