NOTES AND COMAIENTS
(By ‘“Maecenas.”)
Rowley was backed and beaten at Trentham on Thursday last. Evidently he is not as good as of yore. Taitaiuta scored a king overdue win for trainer J. l'ryer last Tnursday. The gelding was well handled by the native rider, R Alorrison, who is attached to tne stable. \\ henuanui ran well for five furlongs in his race at Trentham last Thursday, and he will be well forward by the time the early spring meetings arrive.
Subdivision, Ned Kelly, and Denier will set a torrid pace in the concluding; race at Trentham to-day, anti all three can go for the distance (five furlongs). The South Island owned and trained horses are doing well at the winter meeting or the 'Wellington Racing Club, although not numerically strong. Sonena, Wharncliffe, Aberfeldy, Peho. and Dairy Tidings have won races, and Kaikaku and Solrose have run second twice, it oval head has also filled that position once. That Beau Cavalier has more pace than most steeplechasers was shown when he took the lead from sixteen r unners to lead till a furlong from the winning post in the High-weight Handicap at Trentham on Thursday. It is stated that the owner of Beau Cavalier is not at all anxious to go to lliccarton for the Grand National Steeplechase. In fact he is inclined to put the gelding aside for a while, and then take him Home for the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase. The weather at Trentham last Thursday was very cold and wintry, and the decline of £7027 in the totalisator turnover was not as large as those responsible anticipated. There is much feeling over the dates squabble of the Waikato Racing and Hunt Clubs. Those who profess to ! now say that the incident will have . detrimental effect on the passing of the Gaming Bill. On the first and second days at Trentham. Hipo finished faster than any of his opponents, but fourth was the closest he got. In the Parliamentary Handicap, Master Boon drew one of the outside positions, but. jumping out smartly, Henderson immediately went over to the rails. The result was that many of the inside division had their chances extinguished. Royal Mint was very badly interfered with, and Black Mint and Ailoway also got bad bumps. Now that Jockey S. Henderson has been suspended, it would appear that Beau Cavalier is a very unlikely runner at lliccarton this year.
King Lu was responsible for a good effort at Trentham on Thursday last, as racing to the course proper. Phantasy was the only runner behind King Lu. Over the last furlong King Lu put in a fine run to win well. Those who noticed the; fine burst of sjieed shown by Denier on Tuesday last, were quite prepared to see- him win on. the second day of the current Wellington meeting. Denier, like many of the Bisognes. is very brilliant, and when well-seasoned should do his owner good service.
Nukumai is possib’v better now than at any stage of his lengthy career. He simply plaved with his opponents in. the chief flat events decided so far at the winter meeting at Trentham, and if lie strips a® well on Saturday he will take a lot of beating in bhei Winter Hu i dea. On the first, two days of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting the cola-lisa.tor returns .to down £'Booo, as compared with the corresponding days of last vears fixture, which was held under spring-like climatic conditions, before a. big croud. The figures- for trust year’s winter fixture was- £25.000 better than the preceding year, so it can he readily seen that this year’s figures are quite satisfactory. As a matter of fact, those responsible anticipated a £30.000 decline on the meeting, a® compared with last- year.
