STRATFORD NORTHERN CHAMPIONS SOUTHERN ISSUE UNDECIDED OKAIAWA STILL IN THE LEAD
Favoured with mild, almost spring atmosphere weather, the provincial first grade senior Rughy competition, entered into its concluding stages this afternoon, the results narrowing the issue in the Southern Division to two contenders, Opunake and Okaiawa, while in the north Stratford made its claim to the divisional championship secure.
Principal interest in the south matches centred in the meeting of the leaders, Okaiawa, and Opunake, next on the list, the game attracting over 1000 spectators to the Opunake ground. A win to Okaiawa would have secured the south championship, hut Opunake achieved a 6 —3 decision and are still in the running. Drawing with Waimate —3 all —Kaponga lost the chance of drawing level with the leaders. In the other south game Patea got home with 8 points to spare from Athletic.
In the north Stratford defeated Old Boys 14-9; Inglewood went down before Star, and Eltham notched their second championship point in drawing with Clifton.
