WIN FOR MANAWATU.

HOROWHENUA DEFEATED BY NINE POINTS.

PALMERSTON X., July 16

The second home and home match between Manawatu-Horowhenua and Manawiiena Union was played this afternoon before an attendance of 4000, Manawatu winning a good game by nine points. The first spell was in favour of Manawatu, and the second Hovowhenua, but the winners made the most of opportunities. Manawatu attacked from the start, and a free' kick to Horowhenua relieved their line. In a passing rush by the Manawatu backs the ball went to H. Darragli, who was brought down when almost over. The ball travelled across the field to Amadio, who got across. The kick failed. Following loose play among the Horowhenua forwards, a passing rush ended in Roberts scoring. The kick failed. From play in Manawatu’s 25 Brophy cut through the defence, and handed on to H. Darragh, who scored from half-way. The kick missed. Horowhenua attacked, and narrowly missed a try. Their reward came later when Hunt scored and Jacob kicked a jioster. The next try came to Manawatu. Derve fooling the defence. He lost the ball on the line, but Crawford pounced on it and scored, the kick again failing. Halftime sounded with the score: Manawatu 9, Horowhenua 6. The first score after the resumption came to Manawatu, Tremewan forcing his way over in the corner. The kick again failed. Two penalties, one to each side, went begging, and Jacob then missed another easy chance to increase Horowhenua ’« total, but Parata made amends by scoring under the posts. Jacob missed the kick. A sensational piece of play followed from a tussle on the Manawatu line. The forwards took the ball clear and went through the backs. H. Darragh raced from his own territory to score a brilliant try. The kick again failed. In the closing moments Anderson burst from the ruck in the Horowhenua 25 and passed to Tremewan, who scored, the kick again failing. The game ended a minute later with the score Manawatu 18 Horowhenua 9
