THE CONTESTS DESCRIBED. BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL TO THE STAR. WELLINGTON, July 14. Weather conditions bleak in the extreme was the lot of the Wellington Racing Club to-day for the continuation of its winter meeting. The track was in fair order, all things considered. In the Corunna Hurdles, Bonena and Potoanui were the only ones backed. Inferno, Guncase, and Lady Passenger led to the first fence, and once over Bevis and York Abbey took charge from Lady Passenger, Aberfeldy and Inferno, with Guncase and Vexatious last. Aberfeldy moved up going along the back, and half a mile from home Aberfeldy and Potoanui were well clear of Kaikahu, Bevis, Bonena and Guncase. Aberfeldy led at the last fence from Potoanui, Kaikahu, Guncase and Bonena, and went on to win easily by nearly two lengths from Kaikahu, with Vexatious only about a bead away third. Potoanui was fourth, and Bonena, Guncase, Peshwa, Lady Passenger and Inferno next. Avro was a decided favourite for the Maiden Handicap, with fair support for Cerf. Waltzer, and Duke Abbey. Subdivision and Flitter began best, and led on to the course proper from Waltzer, Duke Abbey, Avro, and Catapult. Subdivision and Waltzer tired, and Duke Abbey, running to the front a furlong from home, scored easily by two lengths from Subdivision. Waltzer was four lengths away third, with Avro fourth. Then came Catapult, Tameterangi, and Arrow Boy in line, with Cerf, who was left, next. In the Seatoun Handicap, Peho wound up a slightly better favourite than Rowley, with fair support for Romantic and Bronstell. Rowley, Rahepoto, Wild Work and Bronstell began best, and racing across the top Rabepoto and Rowley just led Bronstell and Romantic, with Royal Head next, and Peho. bard held, last. Rahepoto, Rowley, Bronstell and Sir Moment led in line at the turn, with Peho making a fast run. Peho had run to the front at the furlon’g post, going on to win easily by three-quar-ters of a length from Royal Head. Romantic -wa-s a length and a half away third, with Rowley, Wild Work and Bronstell next. For the Hack Steeples, Hokioi was a decided favourite. Maidos, The Cnrragh, and Kirkwood led for a round from Hokioi, with Taitaiata last. Hokioi went up to Maidos with a mile to go. with The Curragh next and Taitaiata closing up. Comedy Prince hit hard at the hoard fence at the five furlong post, and lost his rider at the next. Hokioi had then gone to. the front from Taitaiata and Maidos. Taitaiata just led Hokioi at the last fence, and heat, him home hv five lengths. Kirkwood was 15 lengths third, with Maidos fourth. Li the Parliamentary Handicap. Chick wheat was a slightly better favourite than Nukumai. Master Doon received all the best of the walk up start, and led out of the straight from Shining Armour. Nukumai, Queen Arch. Alloway, and Black Mint. Master Doon still led down the hack from Shining Armour. Nukumai, Queen Arch, Alloway, Black Mint. Ngata, and Mint Leaf, with Chiekwheat near the tail. There was little change at the half-mile, and, racing for the turn. Nukumai ran past Shining Armour and closed on Master Doon, with Black Mint and Alloway also going well. Nukumai strode to the front as they turned for home and was cantering along. Alloway and Black Mint made good efforts over the last furlong. Master Doon hung on. Nukumai, however, won comfortably by two lengths from Alloway, who heat Master Doon by a head. Black Mint was- a head away fourth, and then came Shining Armour, Lord Star, Merry Damon and Ngata. In the High-weight Handicap, Passionate was always favourite, with good support for Mister Gamp and Beau Cavalier. Gold Rain. Glenidle, Gauntlet, Merle, and Beau Cavalier led past the stands, with Passionate last. Gold Rain led past the mile post from Merle, Outfit, Beau Cavalier, Royal Abbey, Glenidle, Brigadier Bill and Mister Gamp. Beau Cavalier was in charge seven furlongs from home, and crossing the top the order was £'l/au Cavalier, Gold Rain, Merle, Royal Abbey, Outfit, Brigadier Bill and Gauntlet. Beau Cavalier tired racing for the turn, where Merle led and Fairy Tidings, San Pedro, and Closelire became prominent. Fairy Tidings drew out in the straight, and scored a runaway victory by 10 lengths from Closefire, who heat San Pedro by a head. Beau Cavalier was a head away fourth, and then .came Passionate,’ Brigadier Bill, Merle and Mister Gamp. The Members’ Handicap saw King Lu a very decided favourite, with a number of others well hacked. The leaders on to the course proper were Gold Box, Oration, Delightment, Sun Up and Deluge. Solro.se came through in the -straight, and Miss Hupana and King Lu made their appearance. King Lu kept up his effort, and won in good style by two lengths. There was a good battle .for second place, the judge declaring Solrosc and Miss Hnpana a dead heat. Oration was fourth, and then came Hi no, Delightment, Fairy Herald, Nincompoop and Dcluge.
For the Petone Handicap, Thurnus was a good favourite, with fair money for Te Kawana aiid Mareullus. Denier, Mareullus, Royal Bard and Cassolette led Coot into the- course proper. Te Kawana came along in the- straight and challenged Denier, who had enough in reserve to win by a length. Coot was a length and a half away third, with Mareullus fourth. Thurnus, Mount Jean and Ned Kelly were next.

LIMERICK SCRATCHED FOR MELBOURNE CUP.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT MELBOURNE, July 14. The advice that Limerick had been scratched for the Melbourne Cup came as a bombshell in turf circles. The horse’s chances were particularly favoured, and the public are mystified as to the reason for the withdrawal, as the reason is not stated in the trainer’s letter to the Victorian Racing Club.
HUGE SUM FOR A COLT. LONDON, July 13. The Aga Khan caused a sensation at Newmarket by paying 14,000 guineas for a. yearling colt by PapyrusCundart. This is 500 guineas below the sum Lord Llanelly paid for Queensign, which never won a race, though he sired a few winners.
