AUROA.

FARM NOTES
In common with the rest of the province, the Auroa farmers are having a rough time with their stock during this weather. A few of the early calvers are being milked, but many farmers are pleased that the season has not commenced as yet. Many farms are changing hands, resulting in the loss of some of our best settlers. The latest to depart are Messrs. G. S'ott, J. Sandforcl, W. Brown and S. French. The latter was tendered a farewell social and presented with a handsome oak clock by Mr. T. Kilpatrick on behalf of the social committee before his leaving to take up a farm at Manain. FARMERS’ UNION. Recently a social was held after a meeting of the Farmers’ Union for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr. E. L. Bigham, who for some time has been their very energetic secretary. Mr. F. Aroa (president, in a well-chosen speech, referred to the excellent work accomplished by Mr. Bigham in his official capacity, stating that the success of the local branch was greatly due to their having a “live” secretary. On behalf of the local union he then presented Mr. Bigham with a neat secretarial ease as a small token of their esteem and appreciation of his past efforts. SOCIALS. About 20 members of the “Soccer” Club met at Mr. W. C. Williams’s new home on the Oeo Road for' the purpose of expressing their appreciation of his assistance to the club during the past two years as selector. As a mark of esteem he was presented with a gold-mounted cigarette holder by the president, Mr. W. Bradford. In spite of the weather the Auroa Pipe Band held a successful social last Friday for the purpose of obtaining funds for the purchase of drums. The results of several competitions run for the same purpose were announced Mr. L. McLeod winning the cake and Mr. F. Kelly the chest of tea. Mr. J. Duff, on behalf of the band, thanked all who assisted, especially the ladies for providing refreshments. Dancing was indulged in till long past midnight. Messrs. J. Bigham and D. Cameron acting as M’s.C., while Mr. Pickering’s orchestra provided the music gratis. This week’s euchre party was not so well patronised as usual owing to the weather conditions. The prizes were won bv Master P. Symes (men’s) and Mrs. L. Bigham. The next party night precedes the farmers’ hall, so the Hall Committee decided not to hold the party next week. SCHOOL AFFAIRS. Mrs. Rowlands, who has lieon relieving during Miss I*. B. Heal’s illness. departed last Friday, as the latter is ready to resume duties. An epidemic of mumps is rife among the pupils, and in some classes more than half the pupils are down.
