Ernest Smith (pilot) and Emory (navigator) took off from Oakland in the monoplane, City of Oakland, at 10.30 this morning for Honolulu and return. The objects of the flight are threefold: (1) To be the first civilians to make the flight to Ha\y r aii. (2) To make the first round trip *(3) To loyver the time of 25 hours 49 minutes made by the army aviators, Maitland and Hegenberger. The ’plane circled over the field after the take-off and then disappeared, escorted by five other ’planes. The City of Oakland carries homing pigeons, yvhieh will be released at intervals of 200 miles at sea. The ’plane made tyvo attempts before it succeeded in getting ayvay. It halted half-way doyvn the runayvay at the first effort, having run into a rut, but was quickly towed back undamaged.
