RIOT AT SHANGHAI
COOLIES STONE POLICE
INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENT. SOLDIERS TRY TO FORCE ENTRY. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 10.30 a.m. to-dav. SHANGHAI. July 14. A minor riot occurred on the northern boundary of the international settlement. A group of Cantonese soldiers tried to- force an entry-, and when stopped, by the police commenced abusing them. This attracted a crowd of hawkers, coolies and loafers, who stoned the police, the majority of whom were wounded, 'but not seriously. Reinforcements of police and members of the Green Howards Battalion, who were billeted near by, quelled thle riot, returning the stone-throwing with a baton charge, dispersing the mob.
