CAUSE OF A FIRE.
CIGARETTE LIGHTS PETROL. In their report for last year the British inspectors of explosives state: “There has for some time been a controversy regarding the possibility of a cigarette lighting petrol vapour, and the following accident, which occurred at the Lothian Arms, Lambeth, is of interest. “The husband of the occupier was enagaged in cleaning a pair of gloves with petrol contained in an open bowl, while smoking a cigarette. The police report states that lie dropped the cigarette, and, on striking the stone floor close to the bowl of petrol, it ignited the vapour, and the portion of the building was practically burned out by the resulting fire. The police inspector particularly asked the man whether he was not lighting a cigarette at the time, but he insisted —and there was no reason to doubt him—that the dropping of the cigarette caused the fire.”
