MOKOIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GENERAL. Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers left here this week and are making their home for the future, in New Plymouth. Mumps have been very general for some considerable time and the school attendance has suffered as a consequence. The epidemic has not been confined to juveniles as many of the adults have been laid low.
Motorists and cyclists should take warning that the Tbngalioe bridge is not to be trifled with, especialy coming on to it front the month. Several cases have been noted where motor-cars even when travelling at a very low speed, have come to grief owing to the slippery nature and bad angle of the bridge approach- One driver reported that his car .tried to turn on the bridge and got wedged. BOY SCOUTS. The Boy Scout movement is still making satisfactory -progress and the parades are well attended. It is pleasing to note that Patrol-Leader Fergus Richter won first prize at Stratford Show .for model of temporary bridge. Chief Scoutmaster Oowie, Hawara, puts in much time in seeing to the efficiency of the local troops. GIRL GUIDES. The Girl Guide movement has taken definite shape in this district -as a result of a meeting of ladies -held recently. Miss Ruth Jlawken lias been appointed captain of the local movement and Mrs. 11. 11. Legge is Brown Owl, while Mm. A. T. Tid swell is Tawny Owl. Other appointments will be made when the movement is thoroughly in going order- A. committee of local Ladies has been formed to assist in guiding and controlling the movement, with Mrs. Richardson as chairwoman and Mrs. G. H. Quinn as secretary. There was a large and representative gathering of ladies at the meeting, showing the interest taken, and ail present weie elected members Qf the committee. It will, 1 understand, be a few weeks before the first parade of Guides. Commissioner Mrs. Houston, Hawera, is giving an address in the hall to-night (.Wednesday), when all are invited to .attend. Gentlemen will be admitted free -and supper will be provided.
FANCY DREGS BALL. The fancy dress bail held in the hall was a- great .success in every way, and it -is some ,years since such a large number of dancers turned out in fancy dress. Mr. and Mrs. O. Paterson, Kapuni, acted as judges and their task was not an easy one, hut their decisions nevertheless gave entire satisfaction. The first prize for best fancy dress—-lady— went to Muss Cockerton, Hawera (Black Cat), and the gentlemen’s to Mr. Arthur Phillips, Mokoia (the\ Sheik). The- prizes for most original dresses went to Mrs. Irvine, Mokoia (Lindeman’-s Port) and Mr. Hansen ,Manaia (Charley’s Aunt). Splendid music was supplied toy an orchestra, and <!- very enjoyable evening was spent. At the dlose of the -proceedings a hearty vote of thanks was a-co-rde-d Mr. and Mrs. Paterson for coming so far to judge the- costumes and for the satisfaction they had given. FARMING.
The- winter season is well on the way now and soon the call of the cow (and the calf) will be heard once more. The weather lately has been very wet and paddocks generally, are in a very isodden state, but herd* are looking" well and fit, and with a good supply of hav and ensilage still to. 1 feed out thev should get a good start off for the coming season. It is gratifying to note th-e improvement in the dairy produce market during the last few days and prospect* are much brighter for this year. The local factory will soon he operating again a* there are indications _ of many "cows coming into profit during the next fortnight or so.
