FIRE PROTECTION.
SUBURBAN AREAS. FURTHER DETAILS OF CANVASS. A report submitted by the clerk to the ordinary meeting of the Hawera County Council oil Saturday gave interesting details of the . buildings and owners affected by the extension of fire protection arranged with the Fire Board. “The refusals have numbered 24,’ he said. “Absentee owners total 44, while ten properties are lion-rateable and eleven have not been available lor interview. In Beach Road, out of 33 buildings 14 have agreed to pay, 3 have refused, 14 were absentee owners, and 1 was a non-rateable property. In South Road the figures are 32, 23, 2,3, 2; Waihi Road, 21, 10, 3,7, 1; Hunter Street, 14, 10, 2,0, 1; Dive’s Avenue, 12, 8,2, 2,0; Princes Street extension, 31, 14, 6,8, 0; Manawapou Road, 12, 6,2, 4,0; St. George Street, 5,3, 0,2, 0; Glover Road, 21, 5,3, 4, 6. The total number of buildings affected by the proposed extension was 183, and of these 93 owners had agreed to contribute. He added that reduced rates for insurance were allowed for a distance of three chains from the borough boundary, which was identical with the Fire Board boundary. This was .'mentioned to the chairman of the Fire Board, but the latter emphasised the fact that, even so, places outside their boundary would not receive fire protection under the present conditions. The chairman saio he believed the best thing to do would be to meet the Fire Board and discuss the whole position. The board had agreed- to keep the matter open. A delegations wais selected, as reto go fully into- the matter.
