ELTHAM COUNTY COUNCIL

WORK FOR THE MONTH. Tlie monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council was held in EltEam on Saturday and was attended by Councillors C. J. Belcher (chairman), E. J. Gifford, C. E. McGuinnes.s, W. E. Clarke, A. L. CampbeT, M. W. Barker, A. V. Mes.sa.na, A. (MeWilliam, and R. J. Knuckey. RAILWAY SIGNBOARDS. Tire following communication was received from Mr T. M. Ball, the Highway Board’s representative on the No. 7 District Highways Council: “You will no ,doubt have noticed that the railway signboards situated along the Lepperton-Hawera section of the highways are singularly misleading to the public, and to rectify matters I have brought the matter up before the board, ana proposed placing the notices referring to side roads five chains from the crossings, main road notices to remain as at present. The board and the Railway Department have agreed to the proposal, and the hoard has signified willingness to pay its proportion of the cost. After shifting, the hoards will require repainting. I should bo. pleased if you would deal with this mater promptly and secure uniformity of action.” —On the motion of the chairman and Cr. McWilliam, it was resolved to accede to the request. * SEWERAGE PURIFICATION. The Town Clerk of Eltham (Mr W Waters) advised that it was his council’s intention to undertake a sewerage purification system for Bridge Street West. It was estimated that the system wow'd be readv to connect with the County Council’s property in a bom two months from date. This information was .supplied to avoid delay in connecting up by putting in hand at once the necessary work. The chairman ©aid he; understood that drainage was available and it should be effected. The cost of connecting the throe cottages concerned would be over £IOO. On the motion of Ors. Carter and Campbell, the matter was left in the hands of the engineer. GENERAL.

The offer of the Eltham Dairy Company to lease a paddock at the Rawhitiroa factory to the council for £1 per annum was accepted. The Secretary of tlie Treasury advised that it was not necessary to obtain consent to raising the, balance of the OiiKia.ua Riding East roads loan of £-1000. . A request from Mr A. Cocker. Rawhitiroa, for the Council’s permission to shift the road fence nearer to the tar-sea'ed road opposite Mr Gernhofi'er’s residence, to avoid having to drive his cows through swamp, was referred to the riding member and engineer, with power to act, as was also an application from Miss Z. Hopkins for permission to erect a carshed at the junction of Rawhitiroa and Mataiwhetu Roads. A matter which was dealt with at the council’s last meeting in reference to filling in a drain on the application of Mr S. D. Belton, Kaponga, was reported on. The drain had been! inspected by the chairman, Cr. Messana, and the engineer, who found that there were four inches of water running through tlie drain, and the neighbouring landowner objected to the filling.— The matter was left in the hands of the riding members to deal with and further report thereon. AVAILABILITY OF RATE,. Advice was received from Air W. J. Tristram, secretary to the Taranaki Power Board that, in order to expedite the preparation of the board’s rate roll, for the purposes of levying an availability rate, it was necessary that fresh, countv rolls should be supplied. Properties which were exempt from general rating were not exempt, from the. availability rate.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £1069 15s 3d were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Air F. AJjUggeridge reported on the past month’s work as follows: — South Riding. —General maintenance work, consisting of water-tabling and culvert attention, was done on the Mountain, Rotokare and Neill roads. Stormwater drains have been excavated on the Fraser and Rotokare roads. Alangatoki Riding—Water-tables and culverts were attended to. on the Eltham, Upper and Lower Hastings, and Palmer roads. Omoana Riding.—Slips were cleared off the Waitiri, Alataiwhetu. Upper and Lower Aloewatea and Rawhitiroa roads. Two loads of willow cuttings have, been carted from Ompa-na and planted beyond Aloeroa. One old culvert was renewed at Kennedy’ns gate. Widening of the road at Alatemateaonga is being attended to. Metal patching was effected on the Rawhitiroa Road. Kaponga Riding.—Genera l , maintenance work was carried out on the Alauaia, Neill. Palmer. Eltham and Auroa Roads. Weather conditions interfered with the placing of an 18-inch concrete culvert on the Lower Auroa Road, but the matter will he attended to next month. Eltham Riding.—The Rawhitiroa and ALangawhero Roads were patched with metal, and general maintenance, carried out on the Anderson. Hu and Mat a Roads. One decayed wooden culvert on Rawhitiroa Road was replaced with concrete pipes. General.—A start was m'ade with the new machinery .shed, the foundstiou being completed. Repairs to plant had been carried out.
