MAORI ARTS AND CRAFTS
WORK OF THE BOARD. MODEL PA AT WHAKA. (by telegraph—press association.) WELLINGTON, July 9. Hi© annual meeting of the Maori Arts and Crafts Board was opened by the Hon. R. F. Bollard, who .said that while at Rotorua lie had investigated the question of a site for the Maori arts and crafts school. It might be possible to acquire the control of the model pa at Wha-ka. and make it a show place for the board. The upkeep and decoration for such a pa would be ideal work for a school of art students. 11 necessary the weavin'g and textile arts could be taught at Ohinemutu. Regarding finance, said Mr. Bollard, the board must economise in these hard times. Unfortunately it was started in lean years, but that would not prevent a good foundation. The board pesolved to inquire re renting a building at Rotorua in which to start the school at an early date, also to approach the Tourist Department for 10 acres to the northeast of the bathhouse as a marae for public receptions. The question of appointing instructors was referred to a committee.
The board accepted Mr. Bollard’s gift of .-C2.J to provide £;> for five years for a student in the arts school.
