IMPORTANT DECISION
PAYMENT BV RESULTS. ARBITRATION AWARD. FOR AUSTRALIAN WORKERS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, July 1. Inc Federal Arbitration Court lias delivered its award, which operates for six months from July 17, covering engineering and blacksmithing trades in all the States with the exception of Queensland and West Australia. A number of employers, including the railway commissioners in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, are exempted from the operation of the award.
Under a special provision the award provides for the adoption of piecework and fixes the hours of work at 44 weekly, to be paid for at the same rates as for a 48 hours’ week. In delivering the judgment, Judge Beeby said, referring to the question of payment by results, that if the employees approached the question reasonably they would help to increase production and do something to compensate for the increased cost of tlie 44-hour week. Therefore, he had introduced a clause into the award which would permit contracts for other tnan ordinary wages, and had provided in the award that individual employers could choose either a daily or weekly system of hiring.
