ALTON.

♦ (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUBLIC LIBRARY. The annual meeting of the Alton Public Library was held on Monday evening, Mr. James Gibbs presiding. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted. One hundred and thirty-eight new books had been added to the library during the financial year, and after .current expenses had been paid, a credit balance of £37 10s remained, and the chairman stressed the need of still further purchases of new books and in doing so invited the public to come forward with lists of suitable books. Special mention was made of the services rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Clemance, especially by the latter, who had voluntarily carried out the duties of librarian in a very capable manner, and the speaker said the committee regretted that she was unable to continue. The outgoing committee, consisting of Messrs. Gibbs, J. B. Piercy, H. <T. Clemance, F. H. Gush, A. Scown, and L. R. Davies (secretary), were reelected. Mr. A. Illingworth was also elected to the committee. It was resolved that the books in the library be catalogued and that 100 catalogues be purchased. LIGHT AND POWER. The settlers of the district are very enthusiastic- over the prospects of getting electric light and power from the Rangitikei Power Board.
