“ Road ” Girth Deep
Not the least of the hardships endured by these early settlers was the state of the roads, their only means of communication. The Manaia Road was little, more than a bridle track, eight feet wide through dense bush, passable only by pack horses, the only mode of conveyance, and girth deep in mud for nine months in the year.
