A defective cress arm on the main lead of the Havera Cbunty Electric Light 'Company's power line was responsible for the current being shut off for over an hour from one o'clock this morning. It was not discovered until too late last ©vending to advise consumers that it would be necessary to cut off the power.
Mrs. T. Sutherland’s name was omitted from the Manaia Ladies’ Committee in connection with the children’s fancy dress ball.
The Tokaora Hall Committee is holding a shop day in the shop opposite the Ilawera Post Office to-morrow, Thursday, in aid of its hall funds. There will be cooked hams, cream, eggs, home-made bread, cakes, vegetables and many other goods for sale. At the Presbyterian Church last night, Mrs. G. H. McNeur said that the Chinese were developing a new spirit. When she and Rev. Mr. McNeur returned to Canton after their last furlough, they had hardly recognised the city, so great had been the advances made. Where there had once been canals there were now reads. Sister Jessie, in addressing a meeting of Presbyterians at Hawera last night, referred to the hold the Mormons had on the native race. The Maoris were willing, however, that their children should bo brought up in the Presbyterian faith.' Sister Jessie appealed tor more assistance to aid in the work of reclaiming the native children. She also mentioned that two men had left the religion of Rua, and this she acclaimed as a striking victory.
