NOTES AND COMMENTS. (iliy “Maecenas.’.’; The ex- New Zen ■laud trainer, G. Price, in,ow dqurin oiled tin Sydney, is again on. iiy short visit to this Dominion. High Heather » considered, unlucky to have been beaten iby Inner Harbour at the Napier Park meeting, yet when he met this victor on considerably better terms at Lhaisiti ngs last Wednesday, Inner Harbour again avion. After isltoavinig splendid loon in the steeptleclmse ho contested at Wanganui and JBMersld-e, Maunga- way iseleated as oho most likely to capture the 'Wellington. iSteeplei-haiSe, but for .same extm;,>wLi lvairy reason, he was not nominated, although ire appears in the hurdle races tor he run tut Trent, ham.
Banjuke’s success in the Hunt Club Cup a,t Hashings on Wednesday was fully anticipated: by his connections. When Biisogne’n son first appeared as a jumper many avero selecting liim to take high ihenmiw, but in this- ire spent ho has not, fulfilled, early promise, as Banj uke is not an old gelding, there is' still time for him to, show hits best.
Although, Penile de Leon did not encounter strong opposition at Hastings last Wednesday his success is pleasing to chronicle, and certainly suggests this consistent gelding developing into a good jumper, who may ultimately win against the strongest of classes. As stated in this column last week, Perl© tie Leon has all the qualifications, that go, to make a successful hurdler—viz,, pace, staying power and weight carrying ability. His effort at Hastings when he Avon last Wednesday proved that he knew how to* jump.
The form of Naistori at the recent meetings, of the Napier Park and Hawke’s Bay Hunt Olufois, was many pounds, inferior .to that shown by her at the last Wanganui meeting. A lot of 'rain has fallen at Tlrentbain (much more than the average amount), so on© can forecast a, very heavy track at the winter meeting of the Wellington. Pacing • Club next mo nth.
George Price is not visiting New Zealand for pleasure only; the visit is being made with the .idea, of picking up a good horse, should, one be available. Tho animal Price is on the look for must be up to weight-for-ago standard. Alania broke down while contesting a. hurdle trace at Hastings hist Wednesday. Since leaving W. Dwyer’s stable, Aflar.ro litas cost betters a, lot of money, lu his racing during the last eighteen months Aiari.c has .shown signs of being a, “quitter.’’ Callunai iron very ©atsilv at the Ha wire's Bay Hunt Club’s meeting, and-
is a welcome addition ho the ranks of our hurdlers. Calluna was .sired iby tho imported Heather Mixture from a mar© named Float. The latter was raced by Mr. El J. Watt and was a. good performer .in her day. The ea-s-v manner in which Hoa.riri disposed of hi.s opponents at Hastings last Wednesday will bring him onto great favour for Inis engagements 1 at, the coming Wellington meeting. Hast year the son of Antagonist showed fine form at the winter meeting of the Auckland Pacing Club, and’ on the strength of h is showing wa.s sent- to race alt Trentba.ni. where he iva« made a big favourite, but lie failed badly. Possibly Hoard- will da better tins year. j On bis arrival in the Dominion from
Sydney this week Trainer G, .Price wm ii 11111 edikiiteily approached >uiicl asked .Ins opinion of Oqmmend»tic>n and Limerick. According to a Wellington.paper Price had no. hesitation in dedlaininig for Limerick, land stated Pipit kshoud the pair meet isjib Randwick in the ispning Limerick would he « big favourite, <ais he iis held in rtihe highest esteem by Australians. As Price rfcifcuined the Australian champion Wiintlbag for his iCiQiitests with Limerick his opinion is more valuable than that of .most others. The secretary of the 'Wellington Racing Club is ia>t present in communication with the Railway Department in reference tq arranging a special train to convey horses to the coming meeting; from Auckland and intermediate stations. If negotiations are successful the train will leave Auckland early on the moralng of July sor 6 and will pick up horses at certain stations. It is expected that a good slaving of mioney will be effected and there will be very little is'htfhting. Both are most important items to. horse owners. The tohaJliisutor returns from the recent meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club disclosed a decrease compared with la&t year of £4407, or over 40 per cent. This is indeed a big drop, 'and falling on 1a istrHiggling club and has a. detrimental effect. Should the returns decline much more.' many clubs may. have to hand in theiiir permits.
