MOTORING INTERESTS.
SOUTH TARANAKI AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. MONTHLY EXECUTIVE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the executive of the South Taranaki Automobile Association was held last evening, linen there were present Messrs S. C. Tonks (chairman), E. P. Cox, J. A. Duffill, R. 11. Leece, W. A. Spragg, P. o’Dea- and Dr. J. McGhie. Apologies were received from Messrs. W. O’Callaghan and G. J. Bayley. AGREEMENT WITH LONDON ASSOCIATION. A- letter was received from the Automobile Association of London stating that Mr. J. JN. Anderson had calleu and expressed surprise at learning that there was no arrangement for reduced membership fees between the South Taranaki and London Associations. A reciprocal agreement had- been exchanged with a large number of overseas clubs whereby members of raui asassociation on payment of three-fourths of the annual subscription, entrance fees being waived. It was suggested that the South Taranaki Association should enter into such an agreement. It was decided to complete the agreement, the forms for which had been received. SPEED LIMITS. The Wanganui Association asked for support of the following remit to the North Island Motor Union: “That the association is of the opinion that the various speed limits fixed by local bodies throughout the Dominion: islhould be aboiliished, and that new regulations should provide for a speed limit on all roads which shall Ire based on the principle of a speed dangerous to the-public. Laving regard to the state of the road and the traffic at the time.” The remit was endorsed. HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.
A letter was received from the North Taranaki Automobile Association to the effect that the association favoured a remission of heavy traffic fees in respect to lorries used' by farmers for conveying milk to the factories. It was understood that some local bodies in Taranaki were actually remitting fees in such cases, and information in tills respect for the southern portion of the province and support for the proposal was requested.—No action was taken, in view of the decision of the Taranaki Local Bodies Association to the effect that- local bodies had! r-o power to remit heavy traffic fees, and the fact that if one class of the community were granted the concessions others would Remand it also.
REQUIREMENTS OF ELTHAM. A letter was received from the secretary of the Eltliam Chamber of Commerce drawing the attention of the association to the necessity for the erection of direction signs at or near the intersection of Bridge and High Streets for the purpose of directing through and mountain traffic on these thoroughfares. “In the course of the discussion which took place regarding this matter it was stated that enquiries were frequently being received from motorists as to where the roads lead.’’ stated the letter. “The members of the committee, some of whom are also members of the association, are deeply conscious and appreciative of the services which the association has rendered and continues .to render to the motoring public, hut regard the provision of notices at this intersection as a necessity for tlio benefit of strangers passing along these roads.’’ The letter also stated that as a result- of representations made by the committee, the Eltham Borough Council had established a camping site in Taumata Park to the north of the grandstand, and it was suggested that signs should he erected with information to this effect.
The requests were referred to the executive of the Eltham branch for more definite information. GENERAL.
Mr. Spragg suggested that to .stimulate interest the next executive meeting should be held at Eltham. The suggestion was adopted, it being decided to invite the Eltham ancl Stratford executives to l>e present. > The secretary -reported that he had prepared the second issue of the “Quarterly Bulletin,” which would shortly be published. Messrs, Lee~e. Spragg and the secretary were appointed a sub-committee to bring down a report relative to the ndeounte sign posting of the entrances to Hawera. The chairman reported that 40 new signs were almost ready for erection, and woulchhe placed in various portions of the district at an ear]v date.
