PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. John Cleaver, of Te Roti, one of the earliest settlers of South. Taranaki, was taken seriously ill some days ago, and is now at the Hawera Hospital. Inquiry this morning showed that he is slowly improving.

The good work done by Mr. R. C. Treweek, of Matapu, in his position ol honorary secretary of that branch of the Farmers’ Union, was fitly recognised last night at the annual social, when, on behalf of the members, Mr. Hoskin presented him with a pipe in a case. Mr. Hoskin said they were exceedingly fortunate in getting a man of Mr. Treweek’s ability to take up the interests of the union. The present was only a slight recognition of that good and unfailing service. Mr. Treweek, in responding, said he would have liked to have done more than he had done, but it was good to have his efforts appreciated. He could not, however, lot pass the opportunity of a tribute to the loyal members of the branch who kept it going, and he hoped it would continue to prosper.
