FOUND DROWNED.
TUTUTAWA FARMER’S DEATH. A ooronial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jesse. Herbert Smith was held at Stratford on Monday before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M. Elisberth Smith, wife of deceased, said she last saw her husband about 7.30 a.m. on Saturday. Just before lie got up he said he. did not feel very well. He put his clothes on and went out, and that- was the last she saw of him. He had been worrying over several things for a few weeks. .The bottle produced had contained: spirits of salts. It had been kept on a- high shelf in the scullery. Harold 0. Everts, farmer, Tututawa. said l he assisted in the search for the body. The search continued from 9.30 aim. till about 1 p.rm., the body being found in about 10 feet of water. The spirits of salts bottle was found close t-o the bank.
Constable Chesnutt gave evidence that his attention had been drawn to the bottle produced bv Evetts. It was half fnli of liquid. Witness smelt, and tasted the liquid, and found that it was merely water. There was a si in mark on the side"' of the bank, which might have been made by deceased falling into the water. A verdict of “found drowned” was returned.—Abridged from “Post.”
