MATAPU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) EUCHRE AND DANCE. There was another excellent attendance last week at the fortnightly euchre and dance, nearly sixty people putting in an appearance, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs. AY. A. Guy, after a play-off with All's. Stewart, and the gentleman’s prize was claimed by Air. J. Brown, of Aiangatoki. As usual, the prizes were both valuable and useful, and were much appreciated by the winners. The dance music was played by several ol the ladies and gentlemen. As there is to be a points prize at the end of the season, there is. quite a keen and lively interest being taken, which, is being proved by the very large attendance each evening.

EARAIERS’ UNION. It is exceedingly encouraging to find that this branch of the above union is so alive and flourishing. This is due very largely to its chairman, Air. F. Hoskin, and to the secretary, Air. R. Treweek. Although the attendance is not all that is desired, nevertheless those that do attend seem to put plenty of vigor into the workings of the union. The annual ball is to come off next week, and the various committees are already busy seeing that tlieie will be nothing left undone that will be to the comfort and enjoyment of evervone. GRAND BALL. A very large attendance~greeted the anticipations" of the ball committee on Wednesday evening, the takings of which will be a decided acquisition to the hall funds. The music was in the capable hands of Boulton’s orchestra, and was very highly appreciated. The floor was in splendid order. The M.C.’s were- Alessrs o. Bootten and C. Hooker. THE SCHOOL. There must be quite a number ot future aspirants for the All Black team amongst our local pupils, judging by the performances put up lately. In a frlenaly match with. Aiangatoki boys Alatapu boys put up 17 points to nil; again, versus Eltham, 15 to nil; and once more, versus Ngaere last week, 14 to nil. The local boys have been undefeated so far this season.

The girls have played several games of basket ball against various district teams, but owing to this game being somewhat new locally they have not had the same success as the hoys in their respective games. The girls are on the average a few “feet” shorter, than other school girls, which is a big handicap at basket ball. All the same they are improving, and hope to give a good account of themselves in the near future.

GENERAL. In the last Alatapu notes re the root crops Air. C. Willis was mentioned as the winner of the Sutton Cup. It should have been stated that Air. AYilils was top of the list at Alatapu, with the very fine crop of mangels weighing out at 96 tons to the acre. Air. Willis has been very consistent with his crops, having won the Sutton Cup twice, and has been runner-up on several occasions. As was stated at the Farmers' Union" meeting, our heartiest congratulations are conveyed to .the “Grand Old Alan,” Air. H. Betts, upon his wonderful crop of 128 tons. Several of our neighbours are leaving this district, seeking fresh fields and pastures new. Clearing sales are being held frequently. That beautiful belt of macrocarpa trees on the Hastings Road, which fronts Air. Harrington’s farm, is to come down, the successful tenderer being Air. L. Schuler, of Riverlea. He is to start chopping very shortly. There will probably be -two or three thousand posts from them besides firewood. These trees must have been planted thirty years ago, and they have been a wonderful breakwmd, besides being ornamental.
