Cooper (Auckland) 193, Aliss Upton (Auckland) 193. N.S.W. AMATEUR TITLE. RESULTS OF SECOND ROUND. SYDNEY, June 14. , The second round of the amateur golf championship was played in showery weather. Russell and Horton had a tremendous struggle. Horton started brilliantly with two at the first and then ’ost the second. The tim'd was halved. Horton won the fourth, and Russell the fifth. The sixth was halved, hut Russell won the long seventh with a birdie four. After the eighth had been halved, Horton squared the match with, a birdie three at the ninth. Horton took three puti s at the tenth, but a brilliant three at the eleventh squared the game again. The twelfth was halved, and Horton took the lead, winning the thirteenth, but a great three by Russell at the fifteenth evened things again. Horton sank a thirty-foot putt for a half at the sixteenth, but missed a putt at the eighteenth and finished one down.. Russell’s round was done: in 71 and Horton’s in 72. In the afternoon Russell won the second and Horton the third. The Victorian won tfie fourth and fifth. The sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, were halved, though a .stymie cost Horton a win in the eighth. From here he commenced to putt badly and lost the tenth and eleventh, and only halved the twelfthi He was then four down with six to play. TTe then won the thirteenth and fourteenth, but Russell negotiated the stymie at the fifteenth for a half. Horton, won the sixteenth, hut pulled li.is tee: shot at the seveniteeiith. His ball moved as he was addressing it, and he duffed his third, and Russell won the hole and the match two up and one to play. Horton played a great game, and was unlucky to strike a player like Russell at the top of his game. Smith, a youth from a . nine-hole course at Longreef, made the .sensation of the tournament. He defeated Murdoch in the first round and in the .second overwhelmed Sturroek, the conqueror of Mor.risen. The results of the (second round are: — Whit ton defeated Harrison 6 up and 5. Apperlv defeated Nigel Smith, 11 up and IV). Russell defeated Horton, 2 up and 1. Walter Smith defeated Sturroek, 7 up and 5. HAWEEA LADIES’ CLUB. For the monthly medal round played or: Friday last the best card was returned by Airs. Hawthorne 112 —32— 80. The second best card was Aliss Robertson’s 104 —18 —S 6. Airs. Hawthorne’s card reduces her 1 handicap to 20. The competition for Friday next is the first round of a three day bogey competition for a trophy presented by Airs. Little.
