ATTACKED WITH A GUN
DETECTIVE’S NARROW ESCAPE. THE ACCUSED’S STATEMENT. IBY I’KLEGKAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.; AUCKLAND, June 14. A sensational affair took place about midday to-day in a house in Great South road, Ellerslie, when Detective Nalder and acting-Detective Power had occasion to interview a „ man named Athol George Beamish White. It is understood that when both officers went into the room White picked up a. gun'and shot at Power, the bullet narrowly missing him. Detective Nalder immediately seized IVkite and took him to the city police station, where he was charged with attempting to murder Orme Snow Wilson Power. White, who is 25 years of age, appeared before Mr J. IV. Poynton, S.M., at the Police Court this afternoon’ Chief-Detective Cummings asked for a remand until to-morrow, which was granted. "White then said : “I thought he . was trying to put me back in the* asylum. That’s why I tried to murder him. That’s as good as murdering me—to put me back in the asylum.”
The magistrate asked accused to repeat this statement, and advised the clerk of the court and the chief-detec-tive to take a* note of what- AVhite said. White did so, and a.ll that he said was t.ranferred to paper.
