HAWERA TRAOH NOTES.
COMMENT BY “LIMITED.”
Beautiful weather greeted the trainers at the Hawera racecourse this morning, with the tracks drying nicely. As there are few of the older horses in strenuous work, trainers are centring most attention on the youngsters under their care. A large number of t-kese were out exercising. Bevis was given a schooling bout over the hurdles on Saturday by _M. Conway, in company with Taitaiata, (P. Holman). Bevis showed improvement on previous essays, and jumped clean and fast. Taitaiata was taken over the big fences afterwards by P. Holman and, after baulking once, cleared the obstacles in good style. Troilus also was given a turn. over the small sticks, and performed well. Euphonium was brougth in a couple of davs ago to his old training quarters looking lusty and well. Euphonium usually comes to hand quickly, and doubtless will be performing in early spring events. 11l luck still pursues our local horseman Maurice Conway, who, after a short sojourn in the Wanganui Hospital for concussion sustained at the Wanganui winter meeting, had just recommenced riding schooling and exercise'work, when a yearling he was riding on the side of the road, on Saturday morning reared and slipped back on him, breaking llis _ collarbone. Maurice will be out of action four or five weeks.
Many people wondered why Lommt. the winner of the Cornwall Handicap on. the first day of the Northern meeting, did not- comnete again at the fixture. It now transpires that Lomint so; overtaxed herself in that race as to break down badly. In fact it is feared she .may not be able to. race again. Alii unconscious of the fact that some of his confreres had been fined for smoking on parade or at the barrier the day previous, a. well-known Taranaki horseman was enjoying a “fag” on his wav to. the starting post on the concluding dav at Ellerslie. when he was renorted hv the ‘‘stipe.” On going to collect- his riding fees he was informed by the secretary that he had been mulcted to the extent of ten pounds for smoking at the post. On remonstratincr to the stipendiary steward, he was answered with a. shrug and “sure they are making an exam-ole. and your IT.”
