Huge steel towers, reaching up to 90 feet, are to be erected at the Middleton railway marshalling-yards. From them powerful searchlights will project their rays below, and flood with light the scene in the night hours (say® the Christchurch “Sun.”) The tower,s will lie set in. concrete, and w.ill resemble chose of an American warship. The new floodlights system has been adopted by the Rail’,wav Department as, a definite policy. The aim is to eliminate shadows, for moving shadows are a source of danger when shunting is being carried out. Beams from'Several points concentrate on an airea in. such a wav that shadows are not thrpwn. The system is" now being installed at the railway yards wharf yards in Greymouth and also at Timaru. It will also 1m? used in the reorganised yards at Christchurch. The necessary material far the yards at Middleton has not yet rome to hand.
