An arch was 'built in Brisbane as a welcome to tin? Duke and Duchess ol York by the Master Builders’ Ambociation and the Timber Merchants Association, under the direction cf the Commonwealth director ol works, in proximity to the Town I Tall. Miany people thought that it was built at the expense of the council until the question of its removal arose. All the parties to the building of the arch disclaimed responsibility lor it 1 ; removal, so it- remained u block totraflic. Made of fibro-oement, the arch, resists the lavages of sun and rain, am! this has given rise to a suggestion that the arch should 'remain and be used as a. welcome t° the Governor, Sir John Goodwin, on hi.s arrival from bin gland. When that eeremonv is over someone will have to decide who is to remove the arch —those who built it and who own the material, or the council, which had no hand in it. Probably the council will bear the expense. Who shall have the material is o further problem for s'-bition. Oak trees take so long in attaining any profitable size that it i>s not a business proposition to grow them;.
