A protest against -the heavy burden of_ hospital levy' borne' by country districts in comparison with the towns was made by the Waitotara Comity Council at its meeting at Wanganui yesterday. The chairman said that ' as a result of a meeting of the counties’ executive recently, a strong deputation would wait on the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A, Young). The Farmera’ Union had also been asked to join. The chairman said that the county councils were agreed that their share of the upkeep of the Wanganui hospital was far too great in comparison with t)iat of the city. Every other hospital’ in New Zealand was in more or less the same position. It was costing the Waitotara County in the vicinity of £1 per head of its population and the Wanganui County £.5 or £6. For every* patient that went into hospital from the county, the city put in ten. Thieves broke into G. W. Smith’s store, Opawa lioad, Christchurch, on Sunday night and stole a quantity of shirts, collars, rugs, socks and cigarettes. It was <a stormy night and the thief was undisturbed.' An attempt to force the lock with a jemmy failed, and the robber then used a jemmy to smash the glass panel of the door", by which entrance was made. No cash was left in the shop by the owner, who lias had I previous experience of burglaries. Just a year ago thieves broke into his residence and stole between £3O and £4O.
