President Coolidge, in his Budget address to Congress, emphasised the necessity of holding down expenses if a material tax cut was to be- realised. \\hi.e Republican Senators urged previously a cut amounting to 300,000,000 dollars. President Coolidge estimated the figure will be nearer 200,000,000 dollars, owing to the demands on the Treasury for tlood and farm relief. The President declared that the figures, which are -superficially encouraging, wili be affected by collection, failures and incidental 1 , items. “Unquestionably,” lie said, “the nation is enjoying a period of the greatest prosperity 7. We must nevertheless remember that the -present affluence is due to sound financial policy, which should serve a® an example to other nations.” The President .stressed the tact tnat the failure to ratify the Mellon-Beren-ger agreement necessitated the revision of the Budget under the heading ‘ debt retirement.”
