During the voyage of Inc liner Remuera from Southampton to Auckland, one of the passengers, a Tx>y named Reginald Burche’J was operated upon for an internal abscess by Dr. W. J. H. Hislop. of Wellington, who was returning from a holiday abroad, assisted by Dr. D. Watson, the ship’s surgeon, and Nurse K. Shorter, a passenger. The operating theatre and tabic were improvised in the third class mens’ washhouse, which was thoroughly sterilised. The ship was run dead slow during the period of the operatum (two hours 40 minutes) to eliminate vibration. The patient made a wonderful recovery, and when the ship arrived at Auckland was able to sit up in bed. However, bis condition was such as to necessitate his removal to hospital for after treatment. The third wireless operator (Geoffrey Hulbert) developed acute appendicitis last Friday. Again Dr Hislop. assisted bv Dr. Watson and Nurse T/. Asten. operated successfully under the same eircumstanees, the time, occupied being 1 hour 40 minutes.
