NOVEL MAGNETO.

GREATER RELIABILITY CLAIMED A new type, of magneto which differs in many important respects from those built up to the present, and tor which important advantages are claimed, has been produced in France. Both the peimanent magnet and the armature are fixed, the use of a. rotary contact breaker has been avoided, and the mechanism is particularly accessible and easy of maintainanee. * The apparatus is cylindrical, with a horizontal axis, and has the contac-t----bieaker driven from a vertical shaft by means of helical gears. The contact breaker is at the driving end of the magneto, but to one side, and is perfectly accessible on removing a cover cap. The cylindrical body or the magneto carries the fixed laminated pole pieces, as in the case of a car electric generator. The fixed armature is carried .on a plate closing the outer end of the cylindi ieal housing, and between this and the fixed pole pieces is a rotating sleeve which provokes the variations of flux in the armature. There are four sparks per revolution, which makes it possible to run the machine at half-engine, or at engine speed for an eight-cylinder engine The main advantages claimed for this magneto are greater reliability by reason of the lower number of revolutions, a hotter spark at low speeds, and greater accessibility of the parts Ijkely to require occasional attention or adjustment.
