The New Zealanders’ match/ against the club cricketers proved a most interesting struggle between welbmatcliecl sides. The New Zealanders’ sporting play made them very popular. They certainly possess limitations, but their keenness compensates for any weaknesses. It niust be remembei;ecl that several members of the club sidei. were worthy! of a place in ooxuiity cricket. The hatting.of Hunt and Newman was worthy of first-rate cricket. Similarity Hazel ton’s steady bowling. Clarke, the wicketkeeper, in one innings, caught four and stumped two, which approaches the record of E. J. Smith, who last year caught four and stumped three in one innings. New Zealand’s wicketkeeping was equally .sound. James, besides keeping down exliras, assisted in the dismissal of three men in each innings, catching two and stumping one in the first, and stumping three in the second. Alleott halted excellently. The New Zealanders made no obvious attempt to force the pace, but Dempster and Mil 1 ® scored freely, reaching one hundred in 70 minutes. Mills played with really good batsman ease and confidence. Dempster drove powerfully on the leg side and played ,a fine all-round innings. The Confei’ence declared its. second innings closed' at the tea adjournment, when, thanks largely to the bi'ight performance of Newman, the total 1 , of 252 had been amassed for seven, wickets. The Nexv Zealanders were therefore set to make 244 to win.
