The weather for the -opening of the wiator meeting was perfect and there

was a very large attendance. Totalisator investments, for the first time for a long period, showed the very marked increase of £12,000. The racing was most interesting, the Great Northern Hurdles being won by Wedding March, and the Cornwall Handicap by Loment. Prince Rufus, Waioeka Jack, and Comical was the order of favouritism in the Greenlane Steeples, the opening event. Waioeka Jack quickly got a big break on the field, Waiau Lad, Prince Rufus, Rayo and Comical following in that order. Waioeka Jack gradually tired, but going up hill the last time was still in front, from Waiau Lad and Prince Rufus, with Comical making up leeway and Rayo last. Comical looked like being dangerous, but fell at the first fence on »the hill. Waiau Lad issued a determined challenge to Waioeka Jack, and overhauling him at the entrance to the straight, heat him home comfortably by three' lengths. Prince Rufus was seven lengths away third.' Town Guard proved himself a good three-year-old by carrying 10 stone to victory in the Jervois Tinokoa was favourite, with Town Guard, Alonsoa, Saucy Lass (ridden by Roy Reed) and Modest Boy. quickly took Town Guard into the lead and going along the back, he had as his nearest attendants Queen Arch, Creation, Modest Boy, and Tinokpa. Creation ran up second when crossing the top and the order into the straight was Town Guard, Creation, Tinokoa, and Modes,t Boy. Tinokoa appeared to head Town Guard at the distance, but Town Guard came again and shook him off. Then Modest Boy canie up with a dashing run, ; and in a stirring finish, Town Guard got home by half a head from Modest Boy, with Tinokoa a length away third. Alonsoa was fourth. Town Guard’s performance was a fine one.

Anchor was a solid favourite in the Penrose Hurdle race, with Enare carrying 500 tickets less and Slump and Glenidle next best backed. Lady Arch, Rahepoto and Tall Timber were the first to show out in a spread-out field. Rahepoto forged ahead in the straight and led past the stand from Golden Glass and Lady Arch. That -order was maintained along the . back, but crossing the top, Rahepoto was being challenged by Slump and Glenidle, Golden Glass being next. Slump led into the .straight from Rahepoto and Glenidle, the last named /then’comiug with a great run to heat Rahepoto in a thrilling finish by a long head, with Slump three-quarters of a length away third. Golden Glass was fourth. Anchor and Enare were never prominent in the running. A spectacular race, with not a single fall, was seen in the Great Northern Hurdles, the principal event of the day. It was a heavy betting race. Kawini was favourite, but. carried only 100 more tickets than the Zircon-Royal E-ornx bracket. Then was a drop of 2000 tickets to .the Wedding March-Royal Abbey bracket, with Day Bell and Archibald next best backed. Day Bell went to the front at the start and led past the stand from Archibald, Wedding March, Kawini and Zircon. Along the back Royal Form moved up and the order was Day Bell, Royal Form, Wedding March, Archibald, and Zircon. Royal Form continued his run and piloted the field across the top and into tlie straight, Zircon, Mount Marta, Wedding March, Archibald and Day Bell following. Along the back the field bunched and then Archibald shot to the front. He led crossing the top from Zircon, Mount • Marta, Wedding March, Day Bell and Kawini. Wedding March then moved up and entering the straight, the order was Archibald, Wedding March, Kawini, Day Bell, once over the last hurdle Wedding March went away ‘to win by -'three lengths from Archibald, with Day -Bell three lengths away third. Mhunga was fourth. The victory of Wedding March was popular. He is owned by Mr. Mervyn Wells, -of Cambridge, and was bred by Mr. R. Hannon, being by Quin Abbey—Uranum, therefore a full brother to Royal Abbey, with whom he was coupled. The Cornwall Handicap, the chief flat event of the day, saw Degage, ridden by Roy Reed, a hot favourite. There was a drop -of £1,600 tickets to Bennapee, with Te Kara, Black Mint, Royal ‘ Mint, Lord Star, Transformer, Lomint., Yoma, Llandudno, and Ngata supported in that order. For winter time it was a fast-run race, the time, 2.14 2-5, being tlie fastest since Mangamahoe won in 2.11 3-5 in 1918. The light-weights had it all to themselves. Llandudno, Lomint, Black Mint, Master Doon, and Degage was the early order. Then Llandudno and Lomint singled themselves -out and were well clear crossing the top. They were still, in front entering the straight, with Master Doon, Te Kara, and Quineoma next. Lomint. gradually got the better of Llandudno and a fine finish saw him prevail by a head, while three lengths behind Llandudno came Master Doon, third, with Te Kara fourth. Royal Mint’ was fifth and Ngata sixth. Lomint’s win for Mr. B. Gold water was well received and was some compensation to that owner for the loss of Chamour, full brother to Lomint, who broke a fetlock' during training two or three weeks ago and had to be destroyed. Just John, owned by Mr. B. C. Lapouple, of Waitara, registered the only Taranaki victory of the day, by winning the Hunt Club Hurdles, for which he was (favourite. Bahadur and Pendavies were the only others supported with much confidence. Fair Abbey was the early leader from Ramblin’ Kid and Pendavies, Just John at this stage being well hack. The order along the back was Ramblin’ Kid, Pendavies, Fair Abbey, and Memsahib. There was no change in those positions crossing the top, hut Just John was moving up and when they entered the .straight, the order was Fair Abbey, Ramblin ’ Kid, Pondavies, and Just John. Just John ran up to Ramblin’ Kid after jumping the last hurdle and just beat him home by a Ineek, with -Fair Abbey fifteen lengths away third. ■ Giendowie was fourth.

Nadarino Avas the favourite in the first division of the Members’ Handicap, Avith Sun Up and Delightment also Avell fancied. Ballymoy was the first away and led along the back from Kingfield, Gala Day, Royal Blood, and Subdivision. Delightment and Sun Up Avere moving up crossing the top and once into the straight these tAVD fought out a good finish, Delightment beating Sun Up by a length and a half, Avith Kingfield a length aAvay, third. Gala Day Avas fourth. Hoariri Avas the favourite in the second division of the Members’ Handicap, hut King Lu A\'as also heavily backed and there Avas good support for Areheno, York Abbey, Archeen, and Sir Archie, The order from the start Avas Sir Archie, Hoariri, York Abbey, Areheno and Antrim Boy. This order was maintained grossing

the top and Sir Archie was still leading when the straight Avas reached. When it came to business Kinng Lu shot to the front and Avon convincingly by tAVO lengths from Hoariri, Avith Sir Archie three lengths further back third. Barometer was fourth. Oration Avas Avell back.
