The Hawera Municipal Band will give a programme of music at the Hawera Hospital to-morrow afternoon, commencing at 2.30 v o’clock.

Mr J. L. Walton, in responding to a toast at the annual reunion of the P. and T. Department last, night, said that .the Postmaster-G eneral had stated recently that last year was the best enjoyed to date. The total receipts were t*3,220,666, and the total payments ,02,346,270, the surplus being 874,396. In the past two years the revenue had increased by £320,000, and the expenditure had been decreased by £70,000. The valuable assistance given to the Park Bowling ' Club by Mr. L. O. Hooker, in organising the fete, shop and art union in reduction of the liability incurred by the club, was recognised last night at a meeting held in the pavilion, over which Mr. W. Grant presided. On behalf of the members Mr. Grant made a presentation of a watch as a mark of appreciation of his efforts. He eulogised Mr. Hooker’s efforts, and assured him that they were most valuable and welcome. Mr. Hooker suitably replied, thanking members for their kindly expression of appreciation. A series of interesting lectures will be delivered ■by Adjutant Martin Brown in the Salvation Army Hall, commencing on Monday evening. They will be* given from experiences of the Adjutant during his visit to thirteen different countries.

The annual Post and Telegraph reunion was held in Scouts’ Hall last night, 'Mr L. J. Buli'i presiding. Among the visitors were Messrs H. G. Dickie, M.P., I>. P. White, W. Callaghan and T. Jones. Speeches were made by a number of those present, when matters of interest were discussed. A musical programme added to the enjoyment of those present. Mr H. J. McKenzie, New Zealand secretary of the P. and T. Association, in the course of a speech ijast night, said 1 that penny postage was not a concession to the public generally,' hut benefited the large business firms. This, lie contended, was at the expense of the workers of thei Department, which was not credited with the actual .services rendered. Mr Poison was telling the public that the Public Services should be curtailed, but, said the speaker, it was well to remember that there was an object in speeches of that nature.
