TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY.

Here are some dicta evolved by a parent whose up-bringing of her family took as its great objective the development of responsibility. (1) Give a child pocket-money that is sufficient in include the purchase of certain necessary accessories, such as gloves and subscriptions to games clubs. If children spend the money they have to suffer exclusion from sports. (2) Do not lend money. Make the child wait for the next pay day to come round.

(3) Only allow a pet to be kept, provided the child looks after all its needs. If the pet does not receive its food dt the stated times, make it clear that the animal will have to go and live with someone who will look after its wants conscientiously.

(4) Make it a rule that those who bestow presents on birthdays and at Christmas, must receive in their turn some form of acknowledgement, even if this be no more than a card.

(5)1 The cost of gifts given by a child must not be wholly defrayed by the parent. As far as possible, teach a child to fashion its own gifts, utilising some hobby like fretwork or beadweaving for the purpose.
