THE DERBY.
A LUCKY OWNER,
BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, June 1. The Derby was run .in pleasant weather. It is estimated that half a million .people witnessed the race, and that £3,000,000 changed hands. The time of the race equalled the fastest ever recorded. It was a terrific finish. The homeward traffic was most spectacular. Vehicles followed in procession for miles, and it took five hours to cover the journey. There were several accidents. One woman was driving a car, the windscreen of which was shattered and a piece of glass cut an artery in her thigh, with fatal results. The “Daily Telegraph” states that besides the stake of £12,000, the owner of the winner, Mr. Curzon, a wellknown theatrical manager, purchased a half share in the Calcutta and Stock Exchange sweeps 'of £BO,OOO and £75,000 respectively. It. would not be an overstatement to say his winnings amount to £200,000.
