PRISONERS SENTENCED
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, June 2.At the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Herdman sentenced Jack Johnston, agedi 28, and Frank Bailer, aged 24, to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for 'breaking and entering _ and theft, and declared them habitual criminals. Herbert Cooper was given 12 months’ imprisonment on one charge of theft. The judge complimented the police on their success in bringing prisoners to justice. His Honour said that accused had helped materially to assist the belief that crime was particularly prevalent in Auckland, but considering the extent of Auckland police district he did not think that there was anything to lie alarmed about. Housebreaking had been prevalent lately, but this was only a passing circumstance. If, added the judge, those responsible for the investigation of crime are supported intelligently and sympatheticaliv from the proper quarters, there will be* little to fear.
