Sir James Allen, late High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, has been, appointed to the Legislative Council.

Constable of Hawera, is at present on annual leave and intends touring the Tauno district.

Rev. W. J. Oxbrow, who for several years has been in charge of the Hawera Methodist circuit, has accepted a call to Hastings, and will take over his new duties in April," 1928. The Rev. E. S. Emmett, of the Methodist Church at Hataitai, Wellington, has accepted a call to take charge; of the Hawera circuit from next April, when the Rev. W. J. Oxbrow transfers to Hastings. Rear-Admiral Beal, who was formerly commodore of the New Zealand division of the Navy, will also represent New Zealand at the conference on naval disarmament, as Lord Jellicoe may not be able to attend throughout the whole period, states a Press Association message from Wellington. Maurice Dickinson, aged 21, the champion breast-stroke swimmer, of Auckland, died at Auckland the other day after a short- illness. Dickinson was a prominent swimmer for some years, and besides competing unsuccessfully in the last Dominion Championship, was a member of the Auckland team which visited Dunedin a couple of years ago. During the current year there will he certain changes in the staff of the Governor-General. Mr G. J. Little, who has acted as private .secretary and comptroller since his Excellency’® arrival in New Zealand, is-- proceeding to England on private affairs, hut his successor has not yet .been appointed. Captain Vernon Wentworth, A.D.C., rejoins his regiment on the Ist January next, and will be succeeded by Lieutenant E. L. Orr-Eiwinig, M.C., of the Black Watch.
