ROOT-GROWING COMPETITION. t YESTERDAY’S WORK. The .judges of the ex-ops grown t>y boys girls of the district schools, Messrs. A. J. Glasson, and Rod Syme, have had unpleasant conditions on several days recently. But they have pushed on with the work, according to schedule. The supervisors appointed in each school district have in some eases not turned up to do their part of the work, and this makes the task heavier for the judges and to those who do attend. The honorary secretary, Mr. E K. Cameron, specially asks all supervisors to attend on the day of judging, and so help forward a work that is altogether for the benefit of the farming industry. Yesterday was spent round Te Kiri, Awatuna and Makaka where the yields Were only moderate.

At Te Kiri Messrs Collins, Agnew and Coxhead, and at Awatuna Mr. Corbett turned up despite bad weather and went round the crops, taking the young competitors on the tour. No work was done at Makaka, but the school was visited.

Very welcome was the hospitality shown by Mrs. McCarrison at . Te Kiri, who gave the party morning tea and by Mrs. Arthur, at Awatuna school, who provided luncheon. The results were as below, points be ing mentioned as before, following the weights for cultivation (maximum 40) and quality (maximum .10): — TE KIRT. Mangolds. Frances Phillips—l 4 tons 2 ewt; 14. 15. 5. Olive Phillips—l 3 tons 3 ewt; 13, 15, 5. E. Phillips—ll tons 5 ewt; 11-j, 15, 5. The balance of the itinerary is as below:—
