BRISBANE MERCHANT TRICKED,
THE USUAL CONFIDENCE TALE.

Outride Cook’s sight-seeing office, a Brisbane merchant, John Walker, accepted the offer of a compatriot, John Kerr, to show him. the city’s nightlife. They dined at the Trocadero, where they casually met .another Australian, John Doolan. There were the usual pleasantries, when Kerr .suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to meet a bill for one hundred thousand francs .and could Mr. Walker lend him the money till the banks opened. He would hand over .as .security a leather case containing almost the equivalent in English notes. Mr. Walker handed over 70,000 francs to Doolan, with whom the case remained as security ._ Doolan then said: 1 ‘Excuse me ■while I buy some cigarettes.” Mr. Walker waited for three hours, hut nobody returned. The police explain that Kerr is really a Sydney man named John_ Ford, a notorious confidence trickster.
