LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Minister of Industries and Commerce -(lion. A. D. McLeod), who represented the New Zealand Government at the opening of the Federal Parliament Buildings at Canberra, has practically completed his official inquiries at Sydney and Melbourne 'into various trade matters affecting the Dominion and the Commumvealth. He is to leave for New r Zealand on Juno 3, arriving at Wellington four days later.
A .handsome cup donated by Mr. H. Bartlett for annual competition between A.rn.moiho and Hawera. third grade football representat’ives is at present on view at Messrs Purser Bros., :in High Street. Tlie first match for the trophy is to be played on Friday. A miniature (‘lip to be awarded to the most improved Hawerai third grade player is also to he -seen.
During the month of May just closed 5.90 inches of rain were recorded at the Hawera Post Office. Rain fell on 16 days, the heaviest fall being 1.63 inches on the 27th. For the corresponding month of last year 7.09 inches were recorded on 23 days.
Archibald Andrew Scott, who escaped from custody at Auckland two years "TTgo, w r as captured by the police at Te Aroha yesterday, stated- an Auckland message. Recently he was located in the Lower Waikato, but broke through the police cordon and escaped. The statement published that Mr AY. Scott, employers' representative on the Arbitration Court, is Resigning, is declared by Mr Scott himself to be “somewhat premature,’’ states a Christchurch message. “It is true,” says Mr Soott, “that I shall be shortly retiring from the Court, but not on account of failing health and advancing yeans. 1 have never been in better health. I have been connected with th Court for 'jthirty years, twelve as an advocate and eighteen as -a member of the Court. When I retire, it wdl 1 be owing to the' continual travelling, of which I am getting tired, and to take up a position in Wellington which will give me more home life.”
The Waikato winter show, at Hamilton, was officially opened bv the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson yesterday, after being entertained at luncheon by the executive. The Hon J. A. Young, and Messrs. C. E. MacMillan, M.P., T. W. Rhodes, M.P., and Stewart Reid, M.P., were also present. His Excellency referred to the wonderful progress the show had made and its outstanding importance. To celebrate the eoming of -age of the show, her Excellency cut a three-tier, ricn 21st birthday ‘cake. Large crowds attended the show, which is on a bigger scale than ever, with fine exhibits ami record entries in the competitive classes.
The effects of the heavy rains of the last two days is shown in the flooded rivers (states a Te Kuiti message)-. The ’water is across the road on the New Plymouth road, eight males from Te Kuiti. and is rising. Service cars are connecting on both, sideis of the flooded area, by drays. The water was still rising this morning. The Mangaokewa Haver through the town, is flooded and the esplanade is under water. At Hangatiki the station and town areas generally are surrounded by water. The through, service to AVaitomo is uninterrupted. On the Te Kami Itoad there is l i»ix inches of water on the road near the racecourse. The rain has now stormed and the glass is rising.
