PROSPEROUS CANADA.

The Dominion Bureau of Statistics review for the first quarter of. this year states that economic activity in Canada was well maintained. The physical volume of business was higher than for the corresponding months of last year. Savings bank deposits were higher, and a marked upward trend was noted in the Canadian bond and stock markets. The March eamployment index numlici- was 96.3, compared with 95.4 for February and 91.5 for March la.st year. The actual employment gain on the preceding month exceeded 7000 workers. At present there is less unemployment in Canada than at any time since 1920. A comparison of actual wages and commodity prices at the ■present day shows that the workers’ purchasing power is 8 per cent higher than the average for the past five years. Banks debits to individual accounts during February showed a gain of 7.5 lier cent on February last year, and bank clearings a gain of 5 per cent. Commercial failures in Canada during February showed a slight- decline compared with February last year.
