DEPUTATION TO MINISTER, OF
JUSTICE.
VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED.
(BY TELEGItAPH—JTBISSS ASSOCIATION.) " WELLINGTON, May 27. The Minister of Justice to-day received a deputation from the National Council of Women, when the president, Mrs Fraser, laid before him resolutions passed at the recent conference in Ch rist church.
Air Rolleston, 'replying, said that, with regard to women police, he was already considering an appointment. lie promised to consider the appointment of a woman to the Prisons Board, when a. vacancy occurred. The. country was not leady for women jurors. The chief difficulty in the payment of prisoners was that tire department did not get the value for sack payment in the case of short sentence prisoners and, at present, that was a consideration.. Also it should not be the obligation of the State to completely provide for prisoners’ dependents. Be promised to look into' the marriage. age and other matters. He was glad to hear that the council was against, the flogging of prisoners for sexual offences. In the matter of equal guardianship, Air. Rolleston said he thought the Act passed last year gave the mother every equality ‘with the father in guardianship. ,
