ECONOMIES DISCUSSED,

C.J.C. ANNUAL MEETING.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 2G.

The reduction of programmes to seven races per day and the cutting down of the stakes for the next season by £7OOO were among the proposals submitted by the chairman, Mr. Gould, to the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club to-day. Mr. Gould said the .club’s position was due to heavy' taxation, and, if the Government continued bleeding the sport to death as at present, it would be disastrous to racing in New Zealand. The proposal that the Metropolitan Trotting Club join with the Canterbury Jockey Club in the ownership of the’Ricearton course, and that trotting meetings be held there in future, was also discussed, members generally hewing in agreement that the amalgamation of the clubs would effect a very desirable econov. The chairman said the committee would discuss the matter with the trotting people, if the latter were interested.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”) Kawini continues to be one of the prime fancies for the “Northerns,” and it is very hard to select one engaged that has better prospects. That once great sprinter Royal Blood has only 61b above the minimum in the Members’ Handicap, which- is run over six furlongs at EUerslie on Friday. If anything like right, the ovent would be an exercise canter for Royal Blood.

Enare ran consistently each day at Wanganui, but his showing did not reach the standard many expected of him, and he may never take high honours.

Although Rayo failed when ridden by alleged good riders, he did so well in the hands of a comparative novice on the second day of the recent Vanganui meeting that should he be taken to EUerslie he must have good prospects in the minor steeplechases. Bonogne finished at a great rate in each of his races at the late meeting at Wanganui, hut on such a turning track, and. over such a short course, Bonognes’ task was indeed difficult. Over a longer journey or on a larger course Bonogne would certainly' have won.

The consistently good form of Benzora, Orazone, Bonogne, Partaga, Paitonu, and others makes one lament the untimely death of the stallion Bisogne. There is no denying the fact that, with very limited opportunities and a very mixed lot of cons-orts, Bisogne lias sired a very large number of useful performers. Day Bell went off his feed on the Wanganui trip, but even allowing for this it is difficult to fancy his chance in the Great Northern Hurdles.

At the Egmont meeting Zircon had to be ridden right out to beat Troilus over twelve furlongs, hut this race worked such improvement in Zircon that, going to the front early in the Century Hurdles, he finished the best of all runners over the long journey of 2i miles. As Zircon gallops well on a right-handed course lie is certain to put up a big race in the Great Northern Hurdles.

Young G. Holland handled the moody Paitonn well at Wanganui, and the chestnut never looked like being beaten. Paitonu has size, and will do further good sendee for his connections. When sent out to contest the Century Hurdles, old Nnkumai looked nice and bright. Over the first twelve furlongs of the race Bowden kept Nukumai fully a dozen lengths behind Zircon; then he took Nukumai up fast, and he looked to have a great chance of winning approaching the Last jump, but he blundered and lost all chance.

At meetings held in the past by the Otaki Racing Club- horses trained in this province have done well, and as our -stables are strongly represented there next week they should at least pay expenses.

Black Mint, the big gelding that beat Civility, Yoma, and other useful performers at the recent meeting held by the Manawatu Racing Club, lias done well since that success, and as the Catmint progeny are noted as good “mudlarks,” many good judges are giving Black Mint a good chance in the Cornwall Handicap. Although good prizes are offered, and are generally more easily won than at other important gatherings, the nominations received .for the winter meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club reveal very few horses outside of those trained in Otago- and Southland. Day Bell continues to be one of the prime fancies for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase, but this is not warranted after the green manner in which he shaped in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui. Day Bell is, no doubt, a very promising young geld, ing, and may do well over jumps, but needs more seasoning.

Yoma finished remarkably well in each of his races at the Egmont meeting, and showed thereby that lie is practically at his best, which, past deeds show, is much above the average. As Yoma races well right handed, and is at home in soft going, he must be labelled dangerous in the Cornwall Handicap, to be decided at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting on Friday next. Yoma will be ridden by A. McCormac. ' The Waikato trainer M. J. Carroll had Green Bonnet to race for him at the Wanganui meeting last week. She was particularly well, and was considered “extra good” by followers of the stable, but, unfortunately for her backers, Green Bonnet was badly placed over the first half of her races, and on the circular course at Wanganui it made her task of getting to the leaders in the concluding stages almost an impossible one. Tuki was a competitor in the two leading steeplechases decided at the recent Wanganui meeting. He was looking remarkably bright and muscular, and was expected to run well forward. Owing to the easy nature of the course, and the pace of some of his opponents, Tuki soon dropped far behind over the first half of the jourriey; hut, as only to he expected, he finished well. If taken back to the Dunedin meeting Tuki should do well, despite plenty pf weight,
