DOBSON TRAGEDY
INQUEST RESUMED.
CONDITIONS IN THE MINE. NO THEORY AS TO EXPLOSION
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) G PLYMOUTH. May 27. The, inquest concerning the, Dobson mining tragedy re-opened this morning before the coroner, Mr Meld-rum. The witnesses were numerous, but not technical. The evidence which had been-, reserved for Government -inquiry stilted that after the mine had been dewatered the end of a burnt candle was found in the workings near where two bodies were found. There was nothing to prove that the, candle had been lit recently, as no wick had been left. It may' have been left in. the main drive a year ago when it was formed and had been washed' further In the mine by the flooding operations.
There was evidence also that sparks were freauenffy struck from the incline rails by trucks being derailed. It was also stated that last- October a . lighted oil lamp was left in the mine. It was .not suggested that the explosion was caused bv similar incidents. No witness ooidd give, a theory a,s to the cause of the explosion. The mine manager, Mr Hughes, stated that it was really impossible to locate the exact- -seat of the explosion.,. The inquiry is proceeding.
