A horse being driven in a street at Carcoar met the elephants of Wirth’s Circus and dropped dead with fright. The driver had borrowed the animal. Only two collieries in the Cessnock district are -working to-day as the .result of the trimmers’ strike. There are now 8000 employees idle. The number idle at Lithgow as a result of the strike at the iron works has increased to 1200 employees, the tunnels, coal mines, iron ore mines and limestone quarries in the district having ceased work. The strikers refused the offer of the Department of Labour to mediate, stating that the chairman of the conciliation committee dealing with the matter was not acceptable as arbitrator. PARIS, May 24. An unidentified naval officer committed suicide by taking poison. He booked a room in a hotel after his arrival by aeroplane from England, and then retired. He failed to appear this morning and was found dead. There wore three pound notes and 50 francs in his pockets. He was well dressed. Papers in his pockets showed that he had a wife and two children in Manchester.
