“Watching growth of gorse and blackberry, fungus and other bacterial growths, also benefits (derived from rabbits, floods, hailstorms, droughts, and other blessings,” was the illuminating reply of one farmer to the question: “What is your occupation?” in the last Census paper, said Mr Malcolm Fraser, Government Statistician, ill a recent address to members of the Palmerston North Lunch Club'. To the same query the following reply speaks for itself : “Milk 24 cows, hoe potatoes, weed orchard, cut grass, mend fences, do odd jobs, ride to Dargaville on business, feed cows when back, milk more cows, go to bed.” “Him sleep —him play” xvas a. Maori’s epigram on the occupation of his two children aged two and four respectively. Other pointed replies to the same question were: “Retired gentleman,” “a, farmer and an optimist,” “Filling in Census* forms,” and “slave.” This last one came from a housewife, says the Manawatu Daily Times. “Never married thank God,” was an eloquent reply to the inquisitor on . a subject of some importance. To the same query a cook who had already worn away 38 winters in hoping, wrote “Not married, hut still hoping.” One' young optimist answerer: “Courting.” while “Singlesometimes,” “Verv much married,” “No —woman-hater,” were among the replies received to the same question. The “income” column also provided t a few original replies, such 'os: “No 'income—all outgo.’!
