HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
MONTHLY AIEEOTNG. The monthly meeting of the H-awe.ra High School Board of Alanageris was held last evening. There were present: Mrs. J. W. Harding, Messrs: R. S. Sage (chairman), J. B. Alurdoch, A. L. Campbell, J. Gray, W. Crompton, J. W. Harding, J. Eintwistle, A. Lees, T. O. Hobbs, and A. Gray (headmaster). HEIADAIASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Air. A. Gray) reported that the school had reopened after the vacation, the roll number being 259 (agriculture 17, commercial 109, engineering 42, home science 18, literary 103). Alisa Turner had taken up her duties yesterday. During the recess the ceilings had been attended to and a new door placed on the balcony. The south engineering room had been floored and lined at the west end. The department’s architect had visited the school in connection with the additional room. He stated that the Public Works Department would; build the room, the plans being first submitted to the High School Board for inspection. _ It was suggested that the caretaker's wages be increased on account of the additional pupils at the school, and also that lie be given an, extra PI for the additional work occasioned during the process of alterations. The report was received. It was resolved to grant the caretaker an extra £L for cleaning up after the visit of the workmen. After considerable discussion the question of an increase in salary wa«s, deferred. Further 'application is to bo made to the Education Department lor an increased grant in connection with'the flooring of the carpenters’ shop. The Borough Council wrote asking the board to eradicate Californian thistle growing in Morrissey Street. —It was resolved to reply stating that* the board was taking all precautions to prevent the spread of the weed and also: to eradeiiate it. The chairman and headmaster were appointed delegates to attend the annual conference of the Technical Edu , cation Association, to be held in Wellington in July or August. The Nelson Technical School Board wrote enclosing a letter from the Nelson Employers’ Association, in which it was suggested that stenography students be issued with certificates showing their degree of efficiency. It was stated that the school pupils had no difficulty in obtaining positions, but that the board would support the idea.
