MISSISSIPPI FLOODS

FURY OF TORRENT. STEAMERS’ STRENUOUS TIME. ACADIANS AiBANDON HOMES. tSY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 11.5 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, May 22. New Orleans reports that the steamer Birmingham, carrying convicts for the State prison, was trapped in the current of the swollen stream and crashed into the pier. The men leaped l to the pier. No lives were lost. Many boats bearing cargoes for the relief of tire refugees were compelled to battle against the fury of the floods. In a number of instances the vessels were carried .beyond their destinations, while the people were left to starve. Motor vehicles are being employed to aid in transport, carrying hundreds of people over waterchoked loads to the high lands. The Acadians, who at first ignored the orders of the relief workers, are now abandoning their homes readily. St. Martin’s is reported to be still holding, but the levees may collapse at anv minute.
